Meet the Nature Photographer Behind the Lens
Hi, I’m Milka, a nature photographer sharing my little corner of the internet dedicated to the outdoors.
“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” – Henry David Thoreau
That quote sums up why I photograph nature the way I do. Most of us walk past the same trees, flowers, and skies every day without really seeing them. I want my photos to slow that down, to catch the small, easy-to-miss details most people rush past: the vein pattern in a leaf, the way light hits a dragonfly’s wings, a single raindrop balanced on a petal. Nature doesn’t need to be dramatic to be beautiful. Sometimes the smallest things hold the most.
I’ve always found my sense of calm outdoors. There’s something about being surrounded by trees, water, or open sky that resets me in a way nothing else does. In Japan, there’s a name for this: shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, the practice of slowing down and simply being present in nature, letting it restore you. I didn’t know the term when I started, but it’s exactly what I was doing every time I picked up my camera and went looking for something beautiful to notice.
That’s really how this all began, but the camera itself goes back further. I got my first camera at age 7 (a Polaroid!), and I’ve been photographing ever since. What started as walks with my camera turned into a growing collection of photos — animals, flowers, landscapes, water, sky, and everything in between. Each one represents a moment I stopped, looked closer, and actually saw something worth remembering.
Every photo you see here starts the same way. I notice something first, then I photograph it. As a nature photographer, I don’t chase perfect conditions or rare subjects; some of my favorite shots have come from ordinary walks near my home (or even in my yard!), moments when the light or an angle made something familiar look new. I use a mix of macro and standard lenses depending on what I’m after, whether that’s the texture on a rock’s surface or the sweep of a landscape. I started this blog in 2012 while living in the San Diego, California area, which is where most of the photos on this site were taken, places like Mission Trails Regional Park and the San Diego Zoo, or a little further away in Idyllwild or the Sierra Nevada. I now live in Maryland, so newer photos will start reflecting this region and others (including outside of the U.S.) as I keep exploring. What matters most to me isn’t the gear, it’s paying attention long enough to actually see what’s in front of me.
I share these photos for a simple reason: I think nature is beautiful, and I want other people to see that too. Maybe one of my photos catches your eye for a few seconds and gives you a small dose of calm and beauty in your day. Maybe it makes you look a little closer the next time you’re outside. Notice a leaf, a bird, the way the light falls in the late afternoon. Beauty is around us all the time. Most of us are just moving too fast to notice it. If these photos help even one person slow down and look a little closer, that’s exactly why I keep taking them.
I hope these images do the same for you, even if just for a few seconds, in the middle of a busy day.

This collection keeps growing every time I’m out with my camera, so if you don’t see a particular subject or place yet, check back, it’s likely coming. As a nature photographer, I’m always chasing the next small detail worth stopping for.
