This animal photography collection captures backyard birds, zoo encounters, and everything in between. From candid wildlife moments to macro shots of butterflies and bees, every image is drawn from my ongoing nature photography work.
I love photographing all kinds of animals, but I have a particular soft spot for close-up, macro shots. For example, watching a bee work meticulously through a flower, collecting nectar and pollen, is endlessly fascinating to me. There’s a whole world of animal life happening in plain sight that most of us walk right past every day. A butterfly resting on a leaf, a lizard sunning itself on a rock, a bird pausing mid-flight. These small, everyday moments in our own neighborhoods are just as worth noticing as anything you’d see on safari. My animal photography is as much about slowing down to actually see these creatures as it is about the photos themselves.

This gallery includes a wide mix of animals, from small insects like bees and June bugs to butterflies, frogs, squirrels, rabbits, and foxes in the wild. It also features birds ranging from backyard grackles and robins to cranes and owls, along with deer and larger animals like pandas and elephants photographed at the San Diego Zoo.
Where are these animal photos taken?
Many of these animal photos were taken during everyday walks and backyard moments in Southern California, along with visits to the San Diego Zoo for larger wildlife. Newer photos will increasingly reflect Maryland and other locations as well.
