Believe it or not, I’ve never photographed a dragonfly until recently. It’s not that I’ve never seen one, but I usually don’t have to have my camera with me. These missed photo opportunities happen a lot, by the way.

Most of the dragonflies that live in San Diego County are the large, bright orange species (don’t ask me for their official name). I still have to take photos of them but I think I know of a few spots where to look. that’s when I find the time to get there.

I got lucky the other day though. Very, very lucky. It was the end of the day and my kids were playing in the backyard. My eldest looked on the other side of the fence and said, Hey, look at that dragonfly! Well, I looked and looked but couldn’t see it. And then I saw it. The gears in my brain started spinning really fast. Gosh, I wonder if I can run inside, get my camera, turn it on, set it, and be back in time to take a picture before it flies away.

Well, not only did I have time to do all this, but I had time to take lots of photos, which is a good thing because many of them turned out blurry, focusing on everything but the dragonfly. But I did find one picture I really, really like. Not bad for my first blue dragonfly photo, don’t you agree?

The small town of Idyllwild, California, is famous for its strawberry creek and its strawberry plants all over town. But after visiting the town a couple of times, I’ve figured out sweet peas also are a popular sight all over. The blooms are either bright pink or white and you’ll often see patches of both colors blending in together.

Sweet pea flowers are very simple but they’re also very pretty. Nature really knows how to make the best out of every plant.

Beautiful tree blossoms, if I just knew what they were

San Diego County is home to many native and non-native plants and trees. Besides the dense California sage brush, the many types of cactus, and the annoying, ugly eucalyptus everywhere you look, you can be lucky and find some gems, especially during blooming season.

I still have a to take a great picture of a jacaranda tree (it will have to be next May or June) but in the meantime, I’d like to share these beautiful tree blooms. I actually have no idea what type of tree this is but I love the bold pink flower clusters that cover it in the spring.

May 2013 update: thanks to one of my visitors, I found out this tree is called a purple robe locust. Just beautiful!

I love photographing fruit, especially when it’s ripe on the tree. The more colorful, the better, especially with a nice background.

A few months ago, I spent a little time taking pictures of lemons and oranges. Here’s what a ripe lemon looks like in the California sun and a beautiful blue sky as the background.

I’m not as pleased with the photo of the oranges I took but I think this one came out OK. This orange looks nice and ripe, ready to eat!
