I love the late winter / early spring in Southern California. It is the time of the year when the landscape looks the greenest, when it benefits from a few good rains after not getting any for six to eight months. Wildflowers start popping up everywhere, starting in January.

By the time March comes, wildflowers blooms are everywhere, from your local park to the side of the freeway. I love it! What about you?

My 2013 photo calendar pick for February is these beautiful lemon blossoms that I shot against a gorgeous blue winter Southern California sky.

Some people have told me in the past how amazed they are at the blueness of the San Diego skies. Honestly, the sky here is not this blue every day but sometimes we’re lucky. And I love using it as a background for my subjects if I can.

It’s been taking me a very long time to go through my thousands of photos to pick the ones to display on this blog, and eventually put up for sale in the appropriate formats and media on Zazzle. It’s one of those things I really want to get done but the task seems so overwhelming, I tend to put it aside almost every day. Very counterproductive.

That’s until a friend of mine, who obviously has more commonsense than me, suggested I start it all with a 2013 photo calendar, displaying some of my favorite/best pictures. The lightbulb flashed over my head as soon as she mentioned it and since then, I’ve been picking, editing and asking people to choose the right photos for each month. All photos were taken in Southern California and portray what nature looks like around here at different times of the year.

I’ve decided to showcase my photo choices for each month on this photo blog, while I’m putting the 2013 calendar together for sale. I’d love to hear what you think about them, so please feel free to comment.

Today, I’ll start with January 2013. This is a sunrise photo I took last January of a winter sunrise. The sky colors were just beautiful on that morning. I’d love to see a sunrise like this one every single day!

San Diego County is home to many types of plants and flowers and Spring is the best season to spot colorful blooms. By the time June comes, everything turns to yellow and brown so you need to enjoy the blooms while they last. Lilac blooms are my favorite for sure (more lilac blooms here).

This past Spring, as I was hiking in a regional park called San Diego Mission Trails park, I noticed a beautiful purple flower on the side of the path. I kneeled down to take the photo below of this lupine plant. I call it the color purple.

This blue dragonfly is my first

Believe it or not, I’ve never photographed a dragonfly until recently. It’s not that I’ve never seen one, but I usually don’t have to have my camera with me. These missed photo opportunities happen a lot, by the way.

Most of the dragonflies that live in San Diego County are the large, bright orange species (don’t ask me for their official name). I still have to take photos of them but I think I know of a few spots where to look. that’s when I find the time to get there.

I got lucky the other day though. Very, very lucky. It was the end of the day and my kids were playing in the backyard. My eldest looked on the other side of the fence and said, Hey, look at that dragonfly! Well, I looked and looked but couldn’t see it. And then I saw it. The gears in my brain started spinning really fast. Gosh, I wonder if I can run inside, get my camera, turn it on, set it, and be back in time to take a picture before it flies away.

Well, not only did I have time to do all this, but I had time to take lots of photos, which is a good thing because many of them turned out blurry, focusing on everything but the dragonfly. But I did find one picture I really, really like. Not bad for my first blue dragonfly photo, don’t you agree?
