Today I’m participating in Where’s My Backpack’s Travel Theme photo challenge. This week’s theme is “sculpture”. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

For this theme, I decided to use wood sculptures that were all created by the same person, David Roy from Idyllwild, California. You can find his wood sculptures as you walk around town, in front of people’s homes and local shops, and of course, right in the center of Idyllwild, with this huge town monument.

This is probably the biggest wood sculpture I saw while visiting his outside workshop. This Buddha statue below is unfinished at this point but it shows this artist doesn’t only carve animals. Not that I don’t like this animal sculptures. They all look great. My own Buddha wood sculpture at home would fit in the hand of this Buddha.

WordPress weekly photo challenge: Companionable

During our recent vacation, we tried to make friends with this little guy below, a white cottontail rabbit.

He enjoyed munching on the grass all around our cabin and didn’t seem too skittish every time I took pictures of him. First I tried hiding behind trees to take his picture.

After a few days, he didn’t seem to mind the picture taking so much. The best part was watching him chase around another cottontail rabbit. Or maybe it was when he got chased by a chubby gray squirrel. Unfortunately I don’t have photos of either, so this little guy alone will have to do. No wonder people have rabbits as pets, they’re very cute and fuzzy.

Ripples can be very subtle if there isn’t much water and that water isn’t disturbed. You barely see a few ripples in the water reflection of this seagull at Coronado Beach.

When ripples are more numerous and wider, they can distort the water reflection more. I like the shape of this white pelican’s reflection in the water because of these specific ripples.

And when ripples are even more numerous, the reflection becomes unrecognizable. This pelican’s white feathers give a nice glow to the ripples in front of him.

The world through my eyes seems pretty young right now. Besides my kids, I’ve been enjoying a lot of baby animals all around. Here are just a few I happened to spot yesterday and the day before.

A couple of days ago, I spent a little time by a local pond. While there, I noticed a lot of young birds, including this juvenile black-crowned night heron. He wasn’t shy at all and let me take a nice picture of him.

I also got to see plenty of ducks, like this young wood duck, who doesn’t have all his fancy markings yet. You can see more photos of ducks here.

I was lucky enough to spot these two juvenile great blue herons in their nest at the very top of the tree. Check out the hummingbird who came to say hi to them. They seemed quite intrigued. If you ask me, these young herons are way too big to wait for home to bring their food and should go fly out on their own already.

There are plenty of swallows around San Diego, specifically cliff swallows, who come in the spring to breed. They build their gourd-shaped mud nests on the outside walls of many homes, including my neighbor’s this year. I heard a lot of noise yesterday afternoon so I felt compelled to check it out. This is what I saw: many cliff swallows chatting with each other, while a juvenile swallow was sitting in the nest. There were actually a few more of them but they left by the time I grabbed my camera.

Mallard ducks and wood ducks

It was a beautiful day yesterday and I decided it would be a great opportunity to take my youngest to our local ponds and feed the ducks. There have been lots of babies born this spring and they are growing very fast. So fast, most of them look like adults now. Well, expect for this juvenile wood duck, who displays plenty of down feathers still.

Here’s another wood duck, this one a little older but still not displaying all the bright colors the wood duck is famous for.

Of course, the most common duck there is the mallard. The female mallard duck features mostly plain brown feathers but I love how the early morning light reflects the bright blue sky into the dark water to give it a beautiful blue hue. A nice contrast with the bland feathers of the female mallard duck.
