Blue is by far my favorite color, from very light to very dark, just as it is or with a bit of green or a bit of red in it. I love blue skies, blue waters (where blue skies reflect in), blue jeans – anything nature-made or man-made that looks blue. Here are a few pictures I took this summer that feature the color blue.

The first thing that comes to mind is how blue the sky can look here in San Diego. Well, maybe not downtown San Diego, which tends to be overcast many days out of the year. Inland, where it’s warmer and hotter, the sky can be the brightest blue on good days. This is a mountain peak I photographed while hiking in Idyllwild this summer, a couple of hours northeast of San Diego.

I took this next picture with my cell phone camera. That’s all I had available at the time and I thought the very rare clouds and their reflection in the water presented an opportunity I didn’t want to miss.

Spend a few hours in an aquarium and you’ll see a lot of blue. I love taking pictures of sea jellies (aka jelly fish), especially when the tank light keeps changing colors. Here’s a blue jelly fish for you!

Blue and yellow are complementary colors, so what’s not to like about yellow seahorses in an aquarium with a bright blue background?

Finally, this is one of my favorite photos of a duck I took this summer. This female mallard duck was swimming in very still water, mostly in the shade. The water almost looks like a sheet of bluish metal.

Today I’m participating in the A Word A Week Challenge. This week’s theme is “contrast”.  I encourage you to click on each photo to see a larger view. If you like what you see, please subscribe to this blog to receive updates of the new photos I post, usually 3 to 5 times a week.

There are many ways to feature contrast in photographs, so here are a few of my personal interpretations for this photo theme. There can be contrast between light and dark, as in this backlight setting on Coronado beach in front of the Pacific ocean.

Or it could be contrast between light and dark at night, between the bright full moon in the background and the dark trees in the foreground.

It could be the exact opposite with the trees in the foreground in bright light, and the clouds in the background in the dark.

It could be both a contrast in size, small versus large, and in color, white and versus pink, as in this photo of a small white poppy right next to a large pink poppy.

Finally, it could a contrast between what you see at first glance, and what you really see if you look more closely, as in this map of the USA in the water puddle with the colors of the American flag, still one of my favorite shots so far.

Travel theme: Pink

Today I’m participating in Where’s My Backpack’s Travel Theme photo challenge. This week’s theme is “pink”. Remember you can click on each photo for a larger view. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

Pink is one of my favorite colors, and the bolder, the better, especially when it comes to photographing it. I love the many different shades of pink that Mother Nature has come up with, from the light pink of this beautiful rose,

and this gentle light pink water lily,

to the ultra bold pink of this snapdragon flower.

If pink contains a little bit of orange, then it can be called coral pink, as beautifully displayed in this pink poppy flower.

Mother Nature can display several shades of pink right next to each other, for example in these lovely cherry blossoms,

or these pink manuka flowers.

Of course, pink doesn’t only occur among flowers in nature. If you’re lucky, you can witness pink in the sky, whether it is a pink sunrise,

or a pink sunset.

Today I’m participating in the A Word A Week Challenge. This week’s theme is “atmospheric”.  I encourage you to click on each photo to see a larger view. If you like what you see, please subscribe to this blog to receive updates of the new photos I post, usually 3 to 5 times a week.

Here are a few photos to illustrate my take on this atmospheric photo theme. Clouds have the ability to create a very distinctive mood, as they affect the natural lighting, both during the day and at night. I like how they can affect the light reflecting from the moon.

On a winter morning, the fog can create a strange atmosphere as it softens the light from the rising sun.

When rain clouds crawl over the hills, they can create a creepy atmosphere. They’re fascinating to watch, especially because they can crawl quite fast.

At the time I photographed these crawling clouds, I also noticed the eerie atmosphere created by the winter scene in the foreground. When I saw the “atmospheric” theme, this is the first photo that came to mind, and so I’m showcasing it last.

WordPress weekly photo challenge: Juxtaposition

Today I’m participating in the WordPress weekly photo challenge and this week’s theme is “juxtaposition”. Remember you can click on each photo for a larger view. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

I took this first photo with my cell phone camera after my kids pointed out that the water puddle was in the shape of the United States. It’s not until I opened the image on my computer that I realized the water puddle even has the red, white and blue colors of the USA. I love the way it looks and I wish I had had my good camera with me at the time.

I’ve shared this other photo on my blog before but I think it fits the theme of juxtaposition perfectly. This is a photo of my car roof covered in water droplets with the blue sky and white clouds reflecting into it. Once again I only had my cell phone camera to capture the image but hey, that’s the magic of Photoshop.

I hope you enjoyed my selections for this interesting theme.
