Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Water

This week’s Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge theme is water. Water is a precious resource in Southern California. “Precious” as in rare, and as in expensive. They aren’t many large areas of water around San Diego (besides the huge Pacific Ocean) and what are labeled as “lakes” here would probably be labeled as “ponds” in most other states.

I have a lot of photos of water to share. Ocean water, river water, rain drops, dew drops, frozen water… So I think a photo gallery will be best. You can click on any image to view all of them in a slideshow format. I’ve used these photos in previous posts so I’ve left the original captions. This way, if you’d like to view the original post, just search for the caption text in my website’s Search box.

I’m participating in the online adventure travel magazine LetsBeWild.com’s Wild Weekly Photo Challenge for bloggers. This week’s Challenge is: Texture in Nature! Remember to click on any image below to view it in a larger format.

I see texture in flowers and their interesting blooms, in this case a large California-native bush called Baccharis Sarothroides. No, I’m not a plant expert of any kind. A friend of mine helped me hunt the name down, I had no idea what it was when I took the pictures. I’ll do a future post with more photos of this Baccharis bush. I love the fluffy texture of the blooms. And it blooms in the late fall, who knew?

When life gives you lemons

When life gives you lemons, you take plenty of pictures of them! I recently showed you some pictures I took of lemons and oranges in the summer light, but lemons can be just as beautiful on a rainy day.

I picked the photo of a lemon to represent November in my 2013 photo calendar and I wanted to share some other photos I took on the same day. Gray and rainy days are often a disappointment when you’d planned to take pictures on that day. Sometimes you just have to look past the wet grayness to see the beauty. Raindrops can make a great addition to your subject and a grey cloudy sky can be used as an nice, even background for contrast. And the filtered light can be your friend if you use it well.

My 2013 calendar pick for November: a lemon in the rain

Unless you’re from California or Florida, you may not know May and November are the prime harvest months for citrus. Since I wanted my 2013 photo calendar to have a definite local flavor, I chose a photo I actually took last November of a lemon tree.

It happened to be a rainy day and I wanted to capture the rain drops on the lemons. The gray sky allowed some sunlight to filter through, offering a great neutral background. The sky looks almost white and allows the lemon to stand out. You can click on the lemon photo for a larger view. What do you think of it?

Lemons and oranges

I love photographing fruit, especially when it’s ripe on the tree. The more colorful, the better, especially with a nice background.
