Macro Monday: bee on a Matilija poppy

The large white poppy with a yellow center featured below is called a Matilija poppy, more technically Romneya coulteri. This giant white poppy is a native flower of California. I saw these two poppies at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and not in the middle of nature, where it’s probably too dry for these flowers to easily bloom with our ongoing drought. The bees seemed to really like them and they let me take their pictures without a fuss. Enjoy these few macros of bees on white poppies!

Check out the huge bags full of pollen on this bee’s legs. That’s quite a busy bee!

Bees are the first thing I think about when I hear “buzz”. Enjoy my selection of busy bees, hard at work collecting nectar. Some of them are so good at collecting it, they store it in bags on their legs. I also love how bees get covered with pollen – nature’s most perfect pollinators.

I love photographing bees as they’re collecting nectar off the many flowers we have here in San Diego. These pink flowers were actually blooms on a large bush last summer. I think I will add the first photo as a potential choice for my animal theme 2014 photo calendar. I love that hue of pink!
