If you visit my blog regularly, you must know by now that purple is my favorite color to spot and photograph in nature. It doesn’t occur as often as you may think so it’s always a nice surprise to notice it. Here are a few selections of my recent sightings of purple while I was lucky enough to be holding a camera at that moment.

Here’s an interesting looking orchid, with several green and brown petals, and one large purple petal. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a flower with different colored petals before. Have you?

Aster flowers are some of my favorite, as they come in different shades of purple.

I love lavender: its purple color, its smell, its long-lasting blooms. The lavender blooms on the next photo belong to a larger species and they don’t smell, but they still look beautiful.

Here’s a little more purple lavender for you.

Purple can range for very light to very dark. Here is some dark purple on this white and purple pansy, covered with water droplets.

I’m saving my favorite purple for last, in this beautiful grape of wisteria blooms. I’ve noticed several wisteria trees blooming around San Diego. I think it’s time to grab my camera and try to get a few new shots.

Macro Monday: the hearts of poppies

A few weeks ago, I shared several photos of orange poppies I got the chance to photograph while walking around San Diego’s Balboa Park. Here are a couple more close-ups of those poppies. I find the shapes at the center of each poppy fascinating. On this yellow orange poppy, the center consists of a fuzzy star with 10 arms. Have you ever seen a sea star that looks exactly like this?

This white poppy would look quite dull without a bright yellow center. That fuzzy center really is something.

Look, that grasshopper is trying hard to get inside my house. Unfortunately it’s standing at the wrong end of the sliding window for that to happen, which is a good thing for me.

I guess this pitcher plant can’t wait for a fly to wander inside of it for a tasty snack.

Finally a sign of spring is the colorful blooms, but you have to watch out for the bees that may hide inside them, as in this beautiful pink powder puff bloom. Happy Friday!

Floral Friday Fotos: Clivia Miniata (Bush Lily)

It was a pleasure to spot this bush lily last weekend while enjoying sunny and warm weather. The bush lily, officially Clivia Miniata, is a plant from South Africa. It does well in San Diego weather, which is similarly warm (and hot) and dry. I’ve lived in San Diego for over 15 years and it still feels weird to see flowers blooming in the winter, but it sure makes for great photo opportunities when I’m out and about.

Enjoy these bright splashes of orange on this Floral Friday. I was thinking of using them for my post Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: the color orange the other day, but I opted to display orange poppies instead. I’ve seen a lot of orange in the past week!

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: the color orange

I photographed these bright orange California poppies yesterday and I thought they would be a great match for this week’s colorful theme.

Orange poppies are the official state flower of California. You can see them on the side of many freeways as you drive. The ones I saw yesterday are a cultivated type of orange poppy, and a little different from the native state flower. They bloom in the late winter and don’t last long so it’s a great idea to snap a few photos while you can.

I hope you enjoy this burst of orange today.
