If you like to see beautiful fall foliage, San Diego probably is not the right destination for you. Most of the tree leaves either never change colors (think palm trees, eucalyptus, and sage brush) or the few that do just turn yellow, then brown before falling to the ground.
But there’s one tree you can spot here and there that will stand out in Southern California in the fall: the sumac (Rhus Typhina, the non toxic kind). The sumac leaves display various shades of yellow, orange and red and the tree also features grapes of crimson red seeds in between the leaves. I found a great local spot last fall to take pictures of sumac foliage and I’m planning to go back this year for more.

The colors are gorgeous in Ohio right now. We’re going to take a nice foliage sight-seeing walk this weekend.
Lucky for you, I’m jealous! I wish I could fly to the Northeast to snap some great shots. A friend of mine wants to go to Georgia in early November to see the foliage. I told her she’s going to see all of it on the ground if she doesn’t get there sooner…
I love sumac leaves. Their colors are beautiful. I’d love to visit back east and see the colors. They would probably spoil me and make it hard to like my dry desert fall colors here.
You still have a lot of green that must at least turn yellow. I’m lucky I get to see yellow foliage behind my backyard since there are a lot of trees by the San Diego River. I always kid around saying I have the only fall foliage view in San Diego.
Compared to Vegas, I think Idaho has amazing color. But I know Carrie in Ohio would probably scoff at what I call brilliant color.
