It can be hard to photograph the texture of a subject. Sometimes you just have to remember or imagine what it feels like in real life to get the idea. Here are a few selections to illustrate various textures, some of them more pleasant than others.

I don’t think you can’t do a photo post on texture without tree bark. I find the patterns and textures of some tree barks wonderful, but I’d hate to scrape my skin on them. 🙂

The trunk of this cork oak tree looks and feels a lot softer than an oak or pine tree trunk.

The manzinata tree bark peels off as the tree trunk and branches grow larger. The soft and curled shavings make for some interesting texture to look at and touch.

Soft textures feel good to the touch. I’ve never touched the fuzzy fur of a lemur but I bet it’s pretty soft. Look how fluffy it looks in the sunshine. By the way, I still have to find the time to share more photos of this lemur and his buddies, who seem to enjoy the San Diego sun tremendously.

Finally you’ve got to admire (but probably not touch) the gelatinous texture of this sea jelly, which allows it to move around the ocean with the current with minimal effort. I do have more photos of sea jellies to show you also, and a funny story to share about that day. More in a later post!

WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge: Reflections

I love photographing reflections as they can be quite a challenge, since a little movement by fish or birds swimming in the water, or even a slight breeze, can affect the reflection. Here are a few of my favorite reflections in the water I got the chance to photograph in the past few months.

In this first photo, the water was very still, so the reflection of these two white ducks was almost perfect.

In this next picture, you can see a little breeze can distort the reflection of the tall trunks of palm trees in the water. The swimming path of the mallard duck creates even more ripples in the water.

I had a hard time photographing this mallard duck couple but I really like the reflections of the trees and plants into the rippled water in the foreground

I love the way the blue sky reflects into this pond water with its smooth ripples. It looks like the water is made out of liquid metal, like mercury.

Water ripples can make the reflection of a fancy white great egret look a little silly, don’t you think?

This last picture is one of my favorite photos featuring reflections. I love the white circles all over the water behind the white great egret. The gray lines are the reflection of a bridge’s fence that goes above the pond.

Can you guess how many lemurs are sleeping in this pile of fur? Hint: count the tails for the answer…

Look, that grasshopper is trying hard to get inside my house. Unfortunately it’s standing at the wrong end of the sliding window for that to happen, which is a good thing for me.

I guess this pitcher plant can’t wait for a fly to wander inside of it for a tasty snack.

Finally a sign of spring is the colorful blooms, but you have to watch out for the bees that may hide inside them, as in this beautiful pink powder puff bloom. Happy Friday!

A Word A Week Photo Challenge – Frame

I recently took these two pictures while walking in a San Diego County park. They show the same tree branches arching over the path, but I took each picture from one side of the path. I think I like the first one better but I’ll let you chime in.

This is another walking trail in a different county park. I love how the leaning tree branches and tree trunks frame the downhill path.

I like the framing created by this wooden fence right on the edge on the walking path, especially when it’s lined with wildflowers.

Wisteria behaves like an invasive tree if you give the vine the space and the structure it needs to grow on. I loved photographing these beautiful wisteria blooms hanging from the wooden frame. Here are a few photos of wisteria flowers from further to closer.

Finally, here’s a mama panda bear who doesn’t mind being framed to pose for a picture.

I was going to feature flowers for this photo theme until I realized that I’ve taken quite a lot of photos of birds recently, and a number of them happen to be white. So here’s an all white bird series of photos, starting with the white great egret, who loves to hang out by the water, looking for some yummy fish to catch. I have yet to capture that moment on camera so for today, the bird looking for food will have to do. By the way, the birds in the water are American coots. You’ll want to check out their super weird / cool looking feet in my previous post.

The white egret is a lot smaller than the great egret (probably a third of the size) but it hangs out by the water too since it eats fish. Those birds are so used to standing next to people with fishing pole, they aren’t scared easily, which makes it a lot easier for me to photograph them.

Finally I found these two white ducks swimming together in a pond at another park. I was wondering when I’d have a chance to feature them, so here they are. By the way, I love the almost still water reflections in this photo.
