I love photographing reflections as they can be quite a challenge, since a little movement by fish or birds swimming in the water, or even a slight breeze, can affect the reflection. Here are a few of my favorite reflections in the water I got the chance to photograph in the past few months.

In this first photo, the water was very still, so the reflection of these two white ducks was almost perfect.

In this next picture, you can see a little breeze can distort the reflection of the tall trunks of palm trees in the water. The swimming path of the mallard duck creates even more ripples in the water.

I had a hard time photographing this mallard duck couple but I really like the reflections of the trees and plants into the rippled water in the foreground

I love the way the blue sky reflects into this pond water with its smooth ripples. It looks like the water is made out of liquid metal, like mercury.

Water ripples can make the reflection of a fancy white great egret look a little silly, don’t you think?

This last picture is one of my favorite photos featuring reflections. I love the white circles all over the water behind the white great egret. The gray lines are the reflection of a bridge’s fence that goes above the pond.

I was going to feature flowers for this photo theme until I realized that I’ve taken quite a lot of photos of birds recently, and a number of them happen to be white. So here’s an all white bird series of photos, starting with the white great egret, who loves to hang out by the water, looking for some yummy fish to catch. I have yet to capture that moment on camera so for today, the bird looking for food will have to do. By the way, the birds in the water are American coots. You’ll want to check out their super weird / cool looking feet in my previous post.

The white egret is a lot smaller than the great egret (probably a third of the size) but it hangs out by the water too since it eats fish. Those birds are so used to standing next to people with fishing pole, they aren’t scared easily, which makes it a lot easier for me to photograph them.

Finally I found these two white ducks swimming together in a pond at another park. I was wondering when I’d have a chance to feature them, so here they are. By the way, I love the almost still water reflections in this photo.

This super cute grizzly bear was posing at the San Diego Zoo, hoping someone would throw him some of that popcorn he could smell. How disappointed he must have been when the popcorn walked away…

This praying mantis was annoyed to have my camera so close and it decided to stop and freeze, hoping I’d go away. It worked because I got my photos and left it alone after that.

This green Junebug beetle posed on some colorful yellow rose petals for me while I took its picture.

Fellow photography blogger Cee recommended me for the “Capture The Colour 2013” photo contest in her post yesterday. When I read the contest’s terms & conditions, I realized the contest was opened until October 9, 2013. That’s tomorrow, yikes! Since the contest holder is in the UK, I figured I had very little time to enter.

Here are my entries for each color theme: yellow, green, blue, red and white. I’m also supposed to recommend this contest to 5 fellow bloggers so here’s my pick. If I didn’t name you and still want to participate, you have a few more hours to do so.

Remember you can click on each photo for a larger view.

YELLOW – I took this photo of a beautiful sunflower just yesterday. This is my very first sunflower and I tried to fill my frame with it as much as I could, letting the great blue sky fill the rest.

GREEN – this photo of a raindrop on a grass blade seems to be a favorite so it was an easy choice for the green theme. I love the grass blade reflections in the raindrop.

BLUE – this was my very first dragonfly and it happened to be blue. Since then, I’ve photographed more dragonflies, all orange.

RED – I love bees and I love bottle brush tree flowers. This photo is the best of both worlds for me, and a brand new photo on this site.

WHITE – I photographed this beautiful great egret this past weekend. Such a proud bird owning the water’s edge.
