I thought I’d use this challenge as an opportunity to share a few photos I took earlier this week after we welcomed some rain in San Diego. I wanted to photograph the raindrops and although there isn’t much colorful to reflect in the garden at this time of year, I had fun finding reflections of the other plants, as well as the iron fence behind the flower wall. These pink flowers are actually snapdragons I planted a few weeks ago.

Raindrops have such an amazing way of capturing the light and reflecting it.

This next image makes me think of a frog staring at me with big eyes on the top of its head!

I love how the straight iron fence becomes so curvy when it is reflected in the raindrops.

These two brown bear brothers are just the right color for this theme.

Even a bear sculpture, not a real bear, can be brown.

Pine tree sap can go from yellow to brown. It almost looks like caramel.

This is a great gray owl, but if you look at it, it’s actually quite brown. And beautiful.

Talking about owls, this is the giant owl butterfly. Lots of brown there.

My last photo for this theme features a swallow’s nest, made out of mud. It’s a messy job but those swallows are relentless at building.

Nature LOVES to put purple and white right next to each other, especially when it comes to flowers. These purple water lilies with white centers are just beautiful. You can view more photos of these purple waterlilies here.

Here’s an amazing white and purple flower with long, thin petals that blooms on a shrub with almost white leaves. You can view more of these purple flowers here.

Wisteria blooms are some of my favorite and their white and purple clusters dangling down the trellis are gorgeous.

I love these tiny purple and white wildflowers I found on the side of a hiking trail this past spring.

Here is a different type of wildflowers, with some morning dew on them. They are still small, purple and white.

These flowers are purple and white too but they grow on a large shrub.

California lupine is another type of wildflower, this one much larger than the ones I shared above.

Finally, milkweed flowers are blue but the pod leaves they come out of are purple and white.

This iceplant is called lampranthus productus and I love its bright purple blooms in the winter. Yes, there’s a little yellow in the middle of each flower but I couldn’t resist featuring my favorite color for this theme.

This week’s Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge theme is the season of winter. Remember you can click on each photo below for a larger view. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

Winter in San Diego is quite different from most places in the US. It’s definitely milder but by living inland a bit (about 15 miles from the shore, past the first set of big hills), I get to enjoy more drastic changes in temperature than if I lived right by the coast. So while I can enjoy warm temperatures of 70 to 80 degrees on any given winter day, the winter nights are chilly, usually in the low 30s to 40s, and frost pays us a surprise visit many nights a winter.

I could brag and show you pictures of the warm blue skies and bold flowers we enjoy in the winter, but instead I’ll give you a taste of the cold aspect of winter here. Enjoy!

You’ll notice the frost here is more delicate and looks like a thin layer of sugar coating.

Winter in San Diego also means beautiful sunrises.

And beautiful sunsets, like this Christmas 2012 sunset.
