Winter in San Diego looks a little different from what you might expect in other parts of the Northern hemisphere. The days are mostly sunny but definitely cooler, and we can have very clear mornings, or a lot of fog.

We don’t get snow in town, but our mountain caps less than an hour away do get the white stuff. If we’re lucky we get some rain, which we desperately need. I took this photo of my car roof a few days ago. I loved how the clouds reflected on it among the rain drops but all I had to capture the sight was my cell phone camera. I’m still happy with the way it came out.

And if it’s cold enough, we get frost.

I’m working on a post about Christmas lights, but for this winter theme, I thought I’d preview one of my newest photos. Winter means Christmas and the joy of going to look at Christmas lights.

To me, there’s nothing more delicate than water a few drops at a time. Have you ever come close to rain drops or dew drops? You barely touch them or breathe too hard close to them and they fall and are gone in an instant (not so fun when you’re trying to photograph them). Here are a few examples of water in its most delicate form.

Here’s a single rain drop still standing on this grass blade. Tiny droplets also show the fuzzy texture of the grass.

I love the delicate patterns that raindrops can make on leaves after the rain.

How about these dew drops on a spider web created by a grass spider? My kid stepped on this spider web right after I snapped a few pictures.

Is there anything more delicate than dew drops on rose petals?

And how about frost? We get some frost in the winter in San Diego but it comes in very delicate layers of ice crystals. As soon as the sun comes out and starting warming up the earth, the delicate frost is gone.

Today I’m participating in Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge to show photos featuring all one color. You can click on the photos below for a larger view. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

Here’s a splash of green and some raindrops for the first photo of this theme.

This iceplant is called lampranthus productus and I love its bright purple blooms in the winter. Yes, there’s a little yellow in the middle of each flower but I couldn’t resist featuring my favorite color for this theme.

Frost of dead leaves makes for an interesting color.

The same goes for frost on ice plants.

I don’t know what these pink flowers are but I sure love the color.

All for my last photo, I’ll share a splash of yellow, yellow lily that is.

WordPress weekly photo challenge: the golden hour

Today I’m participating in the WordPress weekly photo challenge and this week’s theme is “the golden hour”, that first or last hour of the day that gives such a special light to everything around. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

I love the glowing effect the rising sun rays give to these puffy clouds.

On a winter morning, I love how the sun rays do their best to shine through the fog and make the fall foliage turn gold.

The morning sunlight right after a night of rain has an interesting effect too. I love to capture that special light on raindrops.

We don’t get a lot of frost in San Diego and when we do, it starts to disappear as soon as the sun comes out and exposes its warm rays. So it’s a race against time to capture the frost in the sunlight before it melts.

The late afternoon sun in the winter can give a nice golden look to yellow leaves, and the scene looks even nicer if you can capture the moon in the background.

Finally I like how bright the sky can still be while everything on the ground is getting darker as the sun sets.

This week’s Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge theme is the season of winter. Remember you can click on each photo below for a larger view. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

Winter in San Diego is quite different from most places in the US. It’s definitely milder but by living inland a bit (about 15 miles from the shore, past the first set of big hills), I get to enjoy more drastic changes in temperature than if I lived right by the coast. So while I can enjoy warm temperatures of 70 to 80 degrees on any given winter day, the winter nights are chilly, usually in the low 30s to 40s, and frost pays us a surprise visit many nights a winter.

I could brag and show you pictures of the warm blue skies and bold flowers we enjoy in the winter, but instead I’ll give you a taste of the cold aspect of winter here. Enjoy!

You’ll notice the frost here is more delicate and looks like a thin layer of sugar coating.

Winter in San Diego also means beautiful sunrises.
