Winter in San Diego looks a little different from what you might expect in other parts of the Northern hemisphere. The days are mostly sunny but definitely cooler, and we can have very clear mornings, or a lot of fog.

We don’t get snow in town, but our mountain caps less than an hour away do get the white stuff. If we’re lucky we get some rain, which we desperately need. I took this photo of my car roof a few days ago. I loved how the clouds reflected on it among the rain drops but all I had to capture the sight was my cell phone camera. I’m still happy with the way it came out.

And if it’s cold enough, we get frost.

I’m working on a post about Christmas lights, but for this winter theme, I thought I’d preview one of my newest photos. Winter means Christmas and the joy of going to look at Christmas lights.

WordPress weekly photo challenge: the golden hour

Today I’m participating in the WordPress weekly photo challenge and this week’s theme is “the golden hour”, that first or last hour of the day that gives such a special light to everything around. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

I love the glowing effect the rising sun rays give to these puffy clouds.

On a winter morning, I love how the sun rays do their best to shine through the fog and make the fall foliage turn gold.

The morning sunlight right after a night of rain has an interesting effect too. I love to capture that special light on raindrops.

We don’t get a lot of frost in San Diego and when we do, it starts to disappear as soon as the sun comes out and exposes its warm rays. So it’s a race against time to capture the frost in the sunlight before it melts.

The late afternoon sun in the winter can give a nice golden look to yellow leaves, and the scene looks even nicer if you can capture the moon in the background.

Finally I like how bright the sky can still be while everything on the ground is getting darker as the sun sets.

A word a week photo challenge: Weather

I’m participating in A Word in Your Ear’s photo challenge. This week’s photo theme is weather. San Diego weather is pretty regular, mostly sunny and warm, but we get rain sometimes (never enough), and even frost in the winter (a lot of frost this winter).

Here are a few photos that represent weather in San Diego, using the WordPress gallery format. You can click on any image to view all of them in a slideshow format. I’ve used these photos in previous posts so I’ve left the original captions. This way, if you’d like to view the original post, just search for the caption text in my website’s Search box.

Do you like the weather where you live?

WordPress weekly photo challenge: Changing Seasons

This week, the WordPress weekly photo challenge is all about Changing Seasons, something we view a little differently here in San Diego, California. We do get some frost inland, but no snow unless you start driving up the mountains (less than an hour drive).

The fall foliage is also sporadic but you can find some nice fall colors if you look around, like this American sweetgum. Remember you can click on each photo for a larger view.

There’s a type of tree around here that displays beautiful yellow leaves in the fall. I don’t know what tree it is, but the dense yellow canopies are easy to spot. This tree is just starting to turn yellow.

Here is a recent photo of a sumac tree, which features yellow, orange and red leaves in the fall, as well as red seeds.

There are a lot of Sycamore trees in the San Diego area and their large leaves turn mostly brown in the fall, especially when the drought has lasted as long as it has.

Finally, in a few weeks many trees will be bare, and if the fog continues to show up every morning as it these past couple of weeks, the view outside of my window in the morning will look like this photo below, the most wintry scene you can spot in San Diego!
