Today I’m participating in Jakesprinter’s Sunday Post photo challenge. This week’s theme is Simplicity.

Yesterday was a beautiful winter day in San Diego. Not a cloud in the sky, slight breeze, unusually warm (75 degrees by the coast). Perfect for a visit at the San Diego Botanic Garden with my kids. You’d think January would offer few opportunities for taking photos of nature but I got to snap a few. I’ll share them in several posts and I thought I’d take the opportunity of displaying a few here, with this simplicity theme.

Remember you can click on each photo for a larger view of it.

A pond with some running water exemplifies simplicity to me. And simple is beautiful, like this sculpture at the lily pond by the entrance of the San Diego Botanic Garden.

There’s also a Bamboo pond in the Bamboo Garden, which is about three times as big as this one, but still very small and simple.

It has a  basic waterfall set up, again, very simple. A trickle of water over rocks.

There may have been some animals underwater but we didn’t spot any. Instead we spotted a couple of mallards, or technically a mallard couple having a snack in the pond. I love the simple ripples in the water.

Finally we were lucky enough to see a green heron, checking out the water and looking for some potential lunch. Again, I love the simple reflection of the green heron in the water. Simplicity, what a beautiful theme!

One of my goals for 2013 when it comes to my photography activities is to participate in more photo challenges. I hope to mingle with other photographers of all levels, get more people to see my photos and gather feedback.

This past week, I joined the Project 365 – 2013, where I will attempt to post a photo almost every day, both on my Facebook page, as well as the Project 365 2013 Facebook page. I love to see the other photos people submit on a daily basis!

I’ve also decided to join Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge, which takes place weekly. This week’s theme is “Your 2012 Outdoors and Nature”, with a focus on people and animals. If you visit my site regularly, you’ve probably seen all of the photos below already, and I apologize. If you’re new here, I hope you enjoy my photos of outdoors and nature animals. You can click on each image to see a larger view in a slideshow format. You can also access much larger photos directly from each post, available from my Animals page, which needs some serious updating. Another of my 2013 goals!

It’s been quite an eventful year for me but besides the bad and the ugly, lots of good things have happened, including the launch of this photography website, and the launch of my online Zazzle store to sell photo products.

I took a lot of great photos this year and I displayed some of them on this site. I still have quite a number of photos to go through on my various SD cards but are several of my favorite photos for 2012. You can click on each photo for a larger view and find each photo in individual posts on this site by using the search tool. Enjoy and let me know what you think!

Today I’m participating in Jakesprinter’s Sunday Post photo challenge. This week’s theme is Peaceful. As always, you can click on each image below for a larger view.

I find many aspects of nature very peaceful: the landscapes, the components (water always has a calming effect on me), the smells, the colors and the living creatures (except the predator type!).

For this particular post, I have chosen to feature animals that tend to display a peaceful behavior. Mourning doves are my first pick. I see many of them every day and I hear them cooing to each other, especially during the mating season. There’s something very peaceful about the sounds of doves cooing, don’t you think?

I took my next photo at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. These beautiful gerenuk antelopes were laying down in the tall grass. Their long necks and heads make them look like telescopes, don’t they? I love how they’re enjoying a peaceful sunbathing moment at the park.

I took the last photo featured below during the same trip, just down the path from the gerenuk antelopes. That’s where I spotted a couple of West African cranes. They too had decided to give a rest to their long legs and lay down on the ground for a little nap. West African cranes have the best hairdo, don’t they?

I hope these photos brought you a little peace today. What do you find most peaceful in your life?

For a nature photographer like me, green is a beautiful color, indicating vibrant life around me. Unfortunately living in Southern California means green is actually not a common sight. Any plant or grass growing in the winter starts green, only to turn yellow or brown by the time the summer sun starts its baking process. I’m lucky enough to live right by the San Diego River, which is heavily surrounded by poplars and their pretty green leaves. They’re turning yellow right now, and they’re just as pretty.

Remember you can click on most of the photos below to see a larger view of this WordPress weekly photo challenge: Green.

Here are a few examples of green I’ve encountered in Southern California. I’ll start with my very favorite, which I captured at Dos Picos State Park last spring. This green hue was so surreal, I felt I had just walked into a secret fairyland. I can’t wait to go back there next spring and hope to see similar sights. If you’re wondering what the purple blooms are in the back, it’s Ramona lilac. They make beautiful clusters of flowers, but alas no scent.

I love the green lush surrounding this Stellar Jay bird, making its blue feathers stand out even more.

Finally, you can find a lot of green in Southern California if you look by a source of water. Here are a few green plants, including ferns, that love water and shade. I took this photo in the small mountain town of Idyllwild, California, by Strawberry Creek, this past summer.
