I photographed these flowers earlier today while walking around San Diego’s Balboa Park. They grow on a small bush and the bees seemed very happy to find these blooms in early February. I couldn’t resist taking a few pictures of them, even though I have no idea what these light purple flowers are. If you know, please enlighten me in the comments!

This bright orange red flower with long stamens is called Caesalpinia pulcherrima, or red bird of paradise, or Mexican bird of paradise, to name a few. It grows on a shrub and I photographed it last summer at the San Diego Zoo. It was making red seed pods in the middle of the blooms.

If you’re still experiencing a lot of snow, ice or gray where you are today, I thought you could enjoy a little ray of sunshine and some bold colors. And to make you feel better, we’d had two straight days of rain showers in San Diego so it’s not all sunny here. But I won’t complain, we’re having a severe drought and any raindrop counts. Happy Friday!

Some of the snapdragons I planted in the fall seem to have finally recovered from the cold December frost and are blooming again. I never noticed how fuzzy snapdragons can be. Here are a few pictures of pink snapdragons, either in full bloom or in bud form, featuring a good amount of fuzz on each picture. It almost looks like a fuzzy blanket to keep the flowers warm.

Here are a couple of pink and white azalea blooms. I hope you enjoy them if you’re buried under the snow today. Don’t think we get many blooms in San Diego in the winter, though. These photos date from last October.

I spotted these yellow orange Gazania blooms while walking around town this weekend. Originally from South Africa, these daisy like flowers are drought tolerant, which make them a great choice for ground cover in San Diego. They’re not supposed to bloom until spring, but the weather here has been so dry and warm, these flowers are blooming now, in January. There’s something really wrong with that, but it was great to see these bold colors popping out of the ground. Enjoy!
