This bright orange red flower with long stamens is called Caesalpinia pulcherrima, or red bird of paradise, or Mexican bird of paradise, to name a few. It grows on a shrub and I photographed it last summer at the San Diego Zoo. It was making red seed pods in the middle of the blooms.

If you’re still experiencing a lot of snow, ice or gray where you are today, I thought you could enjoy a little ray of sunshine and some bold colors. And to make you feel better, we’d had two straight days of rain showers in San Diego so it’s not all sunny here. But I won’t complain, we’re having a severe drought and any raindrop counts. Happy Friday!

Here are a couple of colorful pansies to start with. Both pansy blooms were watered before I took these photos so you can still see a lot of water droplets on the petals.

This last flower is a gladiolus bloom reaching the end of its life. I chose a back-lit angle to capture the beautiful orange color through the sun light.

I hope these few flowers bring some color to your cold wintery day.

Celosia are ornamental plants in the amaranth family, Amaranthaceae. Their name is derived from the Greek word κηλος (kelos), which means burned. Celosia comes in a variety of colors, but when you spot the red, orange and yellow Celosia flowers, you can understand why their flame-like look earned them their name. I hope these Celosia blooms bring some color to your day. Enjoy!

I love asters because they seem so easy to grow and maintain, they just pop up in every public place. And what’s not to like about them? They’re not too big, not to small, and very colorful. To me, a bed of asters is always shouting, we’re happy today and you should be too!

Asters come in a variety of colors but my favorite is purple. Here’s a dark purple aster flower, followed by a light purple aster. Both flowers show leftover raindrops on their petals from the morning’s watering, a lovely touch left for me to capture on camera.

If you need a little splash of color today, I have just the thing for you – a bright yellow sunflower I photographed at a local pumpkin patch earlier this week.

I love how the center of the sunflower expands as the sunflower seeds grow inside of it.

It’s amazing how large the center grows as the seeds develop.
