For this “line” photo theme, I decided to use a few random photos I took recently, displaying the various aspects of fall in San Diego. I love the fall foliage of the sycamore tree captured in the right light. You can clearly see the lines running through every leaf of the tree.

The warm weather here means we get a lot of blooms in the fall, like this purple bougainvillea. Bougainvillea trees always seem to grow new branches at random heights and directions, creating a disorganized web of lines.

These rain clouds creeping and crawling over the hills of San Diego during a winter storm always look eerie.

The landscape in front of those hills was just as eerie looking as the clouds on that day – out of this world.

There’s something quite eerie about fog, don’t you think?

Especially when the fog is very thick and you can barely see a few feet away.

I love the eerie effect of a full moon creeping out from between the clouds. Can you hear the coyotes howl?

Festival of leaves - week 4 - maple tree fall foliage

Festival of leaves – week 4 – rare maple tree sighting in San Diego

Today I’m taking part in the photo challenge called Festival of Leaves (this is week 4). You can view my contribution to week 1 and week 2. You can click on each photo for a larger view. Unlike the East Coast, it’s a challenge to see some colorful fall foliage in the San Diego area. After all, most of our landscape is covered with chaparral, California sage brush, a variety of grasses and tons of cacti. So you can imagine my pleasant surprise when I happened to drive right by this beautiful maple tree during a recent day trip to the mountain town of Julian, California, about an hour away from San Diego.

It was standing tall and proud in someone’s large front yard. I can’t imagine how ecstatic those people must be every fall when the leaves of their tree start turning. Here’s a closer look at these beautiful leaves. By the way, it was an absolutely beautiful day after the very windy Santa Ana winds died down.

Here are a few more maple leaves with the sunlight shining the other way. They almost look golden there.

Travel theme: Brown

I wrote a post with a brown theme just a few weeks ago so I thought I’d use some new photos for this post today. Here are some photos I took today and last weekend to illustrate this theme. Trees are mainly what came to mind, like these many brown leaves that fell off a Ginkgo tree.

I’m not sure what type of tree this is but I was fascinated by its reddish brown bark, as well as the many twists displayed on the tree trunk.

Talking about interesting tree bark, this are the branches of a cork oak tree. This is what we use to make wine bottle corks, cork flooring, cork wall boards, etc. Pretty cool looking, huh?

I snapped a photo of this cute brown mallard female duck today, as she was snacking on some underwater plants. Nature sure knows how to add interesting patterns to brown to make it beautiful.

Sycamore tree leaves in the fall in San Diego

Festival of leaves – week 2 – Sycamore tree leaves

We have a lot of Sycamore trees in San Diego. And I mean, A LOT. They are quite resilient to our ongoing drought, as they let their leaves shrivel up when they run out of water in the heat of summer, preserving their energy for better times. The Sycamore tree leaves turn yellow then brown in the fall, not too exciting to photograph as is. But if you photograph the tree from underneath on a sunny day, you can play with the sunlight to get more interesting leaf colors. Here are a few shots of Sycamore tree leaves that are barely turning yellow and brown at this point.
