I recently visited the San Diego Botanic Garden and photographed the flowers below. I love that garden for the variety of plants I can see there, but it really bugs me to realize only half of them seem to have a label. So I have no idea what the flowers below are. All I can say is, they’re puffy pinkish purple (mostly purple) flowers and their shrub leaves are so light green, they look almost white. This gives a very interesting background to the flowers. If you know what this plant with puffy purple flowers  is, please share in the comments section below. Enjoy!

Today I’m participating in the WordPress weekly photo challenge and this week’s theme is “in the background”. You can click on any photo below to see it in a larger format.

Since a lot of my photos happen to be macros, or at least tend to focus on a single subject, I was tempted to skip this week’s WordPress photo challenge. But after going through my portfolio, I found a few photos that would be a great fit for this theme.

Like these photos of the moon in the background of the branches of a Sycamore tree.

Nature can display faces in so many ways and places. There’s the cute face of the mama panda bear.

The big bug-eyed face of the orange dragonfly.

There’s the face of the tiger longwing butterfly (Heliconius hecale) with his rolled-up proboscis.

There are the faces of two brother grizzly bears enjoying some intimate moment.

There are the faces of animals carved in the wood on purpose.

And the face of a woman that Mother Nature drew in this tree trunk for us to notice.

Mother Nature also likes to use rocks to make faces.

These hidden faces of a man and a dog (profile angle) are some of my favorite faces to spot in nature. Can you see them?

And finally even the sky can show you faces, like this smiley face in the clouds!

I recently got the opportunity to photograph more water lilies. I guess it’s full blooming season in San Diego right now. These water lilies ranged from very light to very bright pink.

Here’s a nice selection of these water lilies and lily pads. Remember you can click on each image to view a larger format. Enjoy!

Macro Monday: My best orange dragonfly yet!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to photograph another orange dragonfly. By now, I’ve realized that accomplishing such feat requires two things: a lot of patience, and a lot of luck.

I was standing by a small pond and noticed three orange dragonflies constantly flying back and forth right above the water. After some time, I saw one of them getting away from the surface of the pond and browsing the tree branches in the area. Well lucky me, it landed on a branch not far from where I was standing! I slowly made my way towards it and I don’t know if this dragonfly was just tired and needed a break, or wanted to give me a break, but it let me get close enough I didn’t have to zoom and I actually used the macro feature of my camera. And this is what I got.

It moved its wings a bit after that and I snapped this shot. Still a beautiful orange dragonfly.

When it had enough of me looming right over it, it flew to a branch further away and I zoomed to get this shot, just because the dragonfly took off.
