Today I’m taking part in Ese’s Weekly Shoot & Quote Challenge. This week’s theme is “buzz”. I encourage you to click on each photo to see a larger view. If you like what you see, please subscribe to this blog to receive updates of the new photos I post, usually 3 to 5 times a week.
Bees are the first thing I think about when I hear “buzz”. Enjoy my selection of busy bees, hard at work collecting nectar. Some of them are so good at collecting it, they store it in bags on their legs. I also love how bees get covered with pollen – nature’s most perfect pollinators.

This past Saturday, for whatever crazy reason I woke up really early. When I looked outside, I realized it was a good thing. I waited for just the right time to capture this beautiful winter sunrise.

When I photograph ocean waves, I like to wait until the very moment when the wave is about to break.

I’m not sure what this West African crane was waiting for, but it made it easy for me to take its picture.

This cute duck was patiently waiting for my kids to throw duck food in the water.
And this seagull was a freeloader waiting for a free meal at the same time.

The first photo that came to mind for this family challenge is one I took recently at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. It features a new Lemur Walk exhibit where you can stand right next to the lemurs since there are no fences. The only thing is, lemurs love to nap for hours at a time so if you don’t get there early, you have no chance to enjoy a lemur walking by your side. There are five lemurs in this exhibit and when they nap, they seem to like it tight, so this is how they sleep together. My kids think this display of curly lemur tails should be called “a curl of lemurs”. I concur.

I don’t share photos of my kids online so here are some other families I selected for this theme. An elephant mom and her calf.

Here’s a mother panda bear and her cub at the San Diego zoo.

And last but not least, a family of Russian nesting dolls, 10 in all. The smallest one is the size of a grain of rice.

Here are a few photos I took during a recent trip to a local aquarium. Aquarium exhibits are poorly lit to enhance your underwater experience, but the darkness is often the cause of blurry pictures. I haven’t mastered this type of photography perfectly, but I still wanted to share a few of these interesting water animals. Remember you can click on each photo for a larger view. Here’s a giant Pacific octopus. You’ve got to love those big suction cups.

The crab with the longest legs (up to 10 feet long!) is the Japanese spider crab. All I can say is, yum!

The coconut crab earns its name from its ability to crack a coconut shell with his pincers. And it does eat the coconut meat too!

Undersea anemones are cool looking and this one was very, very red.

Finally, sea jellies are so interesting to look at. They constantly swim underwater, grabbing food as it floats by. All that without a brain. Wow.

Last week I put a photo post together on a green heron. The problem is, it wasn’t a green heron but a black-crowned night heron. I don’t even know why I thought it was a green heron since I’ve shared photos of a green heron before and it looked nothing like this one. Anyway, I apologize for the mistake but maybe it was a premonition for what happened this past weekend. Green herons in San Diego happen to be in decline, so they’re not that easy to spot. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised to spot one at the San Diego Zoo, hanging around one of the exhibit ponds. Local birds are excellent freeloaders at the zoo: they know where to find free food in all the right places.
So here it is, the REAL green heron. It’s smaller than the black-crowned night heron, probably the size of a raven. Remember you can click on each photo for a larger view. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.
