Today I’m participating in the WordPress weekly photo challenge and this week’s theme is “masterpiece”. You can click on the photos below for a larger view. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

Earlier today I posted a few photos of the supermoon of July 2013. While responding to a comment by Lisa at Northwest Frame of Wind, I mentioned a recent photo of the almost full moon I took in June 2013. She asked me to share it in a future post, so when I saw today’s photo challenge theme was masterpiece, I figured this would be a great opportunity. This is the supermoon of June 2013, a couple of days before it was full. Look how beautiful the moon is, with its moon craters. A masterpiece in our skies.

Nature is a wonderful display of masterpieces, if you play close attention to it. Here are just a few I really enjoyed capturing on camera, including the pistils of this beautiful purple and yellow lily. It’s amazing how many details nature includes in each masterpiece it creates.

The San Diego Botanic Garden has beautiful topiary I consider work of art. Here’s a dancing couple. You can view more photos of these topiary masterpieces here.

This last photo is not nature related but it is a unique masterpiece. I was so mesmerized with this multicolor firework I photographed this past July 4, something I’ve never seen before. I love how the different colors go so well together against the black background of the sky.  You can see more photos of fireworks here.

I recently took more picture of water lilies at the San Diego’s Balboa Park pond, and this is the first time I’ve captured light purple water lilies among small and large lily pads.

I love photographing roses but they’re quite a challenge to capture in the right angle and the right light. I recently took a lot of photos of roses of many colors and most of them had water drops on them from the morning’s watering. Here is a mix of colors for your enjoyment!

A few weeks ago I visited the San Diego Botanic Garden and I spotted strawberry leaves but something was different about the strawberry flowers that came with them. These strawberry blooms weren’t white, they were bright pink!

Many of the plants in that garden are unlabeled and usually, this applies to the plants I’m really interested in. So I did some research on Google to figure out what these plants were. They are called Fragaria red ruby – the red ruby strawberry. They’re mostly used for ground cover, as they rarely bear fruit. They sure make for a pretty sight. Check out the amazing yellow and red pistils on the flower in the upper right corner. They look like someone handpainted them!

I’m finally able to take a lot of photos this week and it’s taking me a while to delete the bad ones, and keep and edit the good ones. I’m capturing a nice mix of flora, fauna and landscapes and I’ll be sharing these photos as I clean them up.

Today I’ll like to share these giant dandelions in seed I spotted in a large meadow. They were the only dandelions around and measured a couple of inches wide. I was tempted to go out there and blow on them, but I wasn’t crazy about climbing over barbed wire and probably stepping on a few snakes hiding in the dry grass. I’m just glad the wind didn’t blow all these dandelions away so I could take a picture first.
