It’s been quite an eventful year for me but besides the bad and the ugly, lots of good things have happened, including the launch of this photography website, and the launch of my online Zazzle store to sell photo products.
I took a lot of great photos this year and I displayed some of them on this site. I still have quite a number of photos to go through on my various SD cards but are several of my favorite photos for 2012. You can click on each photo for a larger view and find each photo in individual posts on this site by using the search tool. Enjoy and let me know what you think!

If you celebrate Christmas, I hope you had a great day yesterday, filled with cheer, family and gifts of love. We had a wonderful time and spend most of the day playing with our new toys. I didn’t have much time playing with my new Bamboo Create drawing tablet but I’m a patient person and I can wait for a quiet moment to try it out.
Here are the two photos of this beautiful Christmas sunset I’d like to share with you. The pixelation is very limited and the colors are just gorgeous. Just look at this sunset photo and this is what you would have seen standing next to me.

I love winter sunsets (and winter sunrises). Besides the potential clouds, which make the sunset a lot more interesting, there’s something about the angle the sunlight shines through that makes the sunset colors bolder. And I love how light the sky is on the horizon, while it gets darker and darker up in the sky, all in one photo.

I know 2013 hasn’t started yet but I’m already thinking about my 2014 calendar photo choices. Do you think the first photo (in landscape format) should make it to my pile of potential picks?

One of the reasons I love Spring and Fall in San Diego is the clouds. Not really the gray stratus layer that indicates rain is visiting for the whole day, but rather the cumulonimbus clouds that appear after the rain. When the light hits these big puffy marshmallow clouds just right, they are simply gorgeous. Add a little yellow from the fall’s leaves and some blue sky and this is what you get:

At night, clouds also make the sunset sights more interesting or even breathtaking. I love the mix of bluish grey clouds and the pink sky that often comes with a Fall sunset. These colors are look to soft to be real. Pink and gray really go well together, don’t you think?

As for a missed opportunity, the other day I saw something in the sky I’d never seen before. It looked like someone just took the liberty to paint the white clouds in the sky with thick brush strokes of dark gray. You could literally see the stroke marks! Unfortunately I was driving with no camera available so you’ll just have to close your eyes and imagine what it looked like. I hope I get the chance to capture such a sky one day. It would make for a very cool picture.

I find it interesting, not to say awkward, to choose “renewal” as a theme in November, when everything in nature is dying or falling asleep. So most of the photos I’m displaying here were taken at another time of the year.
Well, expect for this first one, which I took last fall after a rainstorm. The clouds were still quite grey but the sun rays did their best to light up the golden leaves of the poplars that live by the San Diego River. I love to watch the rain do its magic as it revives and replenishes the trees that have been thirsty for so long, giving them one last burst of energy before they go to sleep for the winter.
WordPress weekly photo challenge: Renewal – after the rain
The WordPress person who wrote the post on this weekly photo challenge suggested us to stay away from the stereotypical renewal of sunrises. Well, I love sunrises and they are inherently a sign of daily renewal. But I like moon rises just as much, especially when they happen in the daylight. They remind us that day and night work together to bring constant renewal to the earth.

I used the photo below for another photo challenge theme but I think it fits this one perfectly. This is a small pine tree growing out of the root of a seemingly dead tree. Nature knows best how to renew.

Finally, nothing screams renewal more than brand new flowers in the spring. In this case, these are California wildflowers, which are also featured in my 2013 photo calendar.

I love sunsets and how the sun tries to burn up the sky as it goes past the horizon at the end of the day. But there’s something very special about sunrises too, where the sun manages to light up the sky for several minutes before you can actually see it. That’s when the sky can suddenly feature some amazing colors. The best sunrises (and sunsets) usually display some type of clouds, which deflect the sunlight in many directions and shades of color.
I took the sunrise photo below on a winter morning almost a year ago. As soon as I looked at the sky, I knew it’d be one of these special sunrises and I hoped my camera batteries weren’t dead because I wouldn’t have time to grab spares. There’s something about the winter light that can makes for great sunrises. This sunrise makes it look like the clouds are on fire. I tried to take pictures of the clouds once they passed the trees, but by then the light had already changed. Better luck next time!
