This past Saturday, for whatever crazy reason I woke up really early. When I looked outside, I realized it was a good thing. I waited for just the right time to capture this beautiful winter sunrise.

When I photograph ocean waves, I like to wait until the very moment when the wave is about to break.

I’m not sure what this West African crane was waiting for, but it made it easy for me to take its picture.

Last week I put a photo post together on a green heron. The problem is, it wasn’t a green heron but a black-crowned night heron. I don’t even know why I thought it was a green heron since I’ve shared photos of a green heron before and it looked nothing like this one. Anyway, I apologize for the mistake but maybe it was a premonition for what happened this past weekend. Green herons in San Diego happen to be in decline, so they’re not that easy to spot. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised to spot one at the San Diego Zoo, hanging around one of the exhibit ponds. Local birds are excellent freeloaders at the zoo: they know where to find free food in all the right places.

So here it is, the REAL green heron. It’s smaller than the black-crowned night heron, probably the size of a raven. Remember you can click on each photo for a larger view. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

I got the opportunity to photograph a couple of black-crowned night heron herons up close during the holidays.  These photos are not technically macro but I didn’t have to zoom in to be able to get these close shots. The lighting was less than perfect so this is the best I got that day. The funny thing is, both herons look like they only have one leg. They must do like flamingos and lift up a leg when they stand up somewhere for a while.

Today I want to take a little time to share a few photos I took recently. Remember you can click on each photo for a larger view. The temperatures have been steadily dropping down in San Diego and we’ve had far from perfect weather these past few weeks. Fall is definitely here in San Diego.

It first started with a lot of clouds and a lot of wind, but no rain. Here’s what the golden hour looked like behind my house a couple of weeks ago. Can you believe not a single drop of rain fell on that day?

Since then, the skies have been covered with clouds, most often white puffy ones, but sometimes very gray ones. Here’s a golden sunrise behind my house from a few days ago. This is quite unusual for this time of year.

We had a ton of rain this past Saturday. The temperatures didn’t go above the 50s and I just kept shivering the whole day. But look what showed up when the rain stopped: a double rainbow! You may think it’s no big deal, but we very rarely get rainbows in San Diego (maybe two a year) and never in December. And a double rainbow? That’s once every few years. Lucky me!

Since this weekend, we’ve experienced some frigid temperatures (upper 20s overnight). This is terrible for the million-dollar California crops, and probably just as bad for my snapdragons in the backyard.

But cold temperatures and a few clouds can make for another pretty sunrise. This is what I went outside to photograph yesterday morning at sunrise. Brrrrr…. but it was worth the shot.

How is the weather treating you where you are? Are you getting snowed in in the East Coast and the Midwest? Are you freezing in the Northwest? Is Florida even spared from this early winter?

I’m glad a shadow photo theme is suddenly popping up because I’ve had a few photos I’ve kept on file just for the occasion. I took this photo of the shadow of a few tree branches several weeks ago, when fall started in San Diego. I like the pattern formed by the dead leaves on the ground, under the shadow.

I took the next two photos this past summer in the mountains. I thought the shadows from the ferns on the rock underneath looked like mini trees.

I took this last photo not too far from those ferns. I love the shadows on the rocks formed by the trees right above. They make for an interesting background for the flowers.
