Today I’m participating in the WordPress weekly photo challenge and this week’s theme is “fleeting”. Remember you can click on each image to see a larger view. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

Nature is full of fleeting moments and that’s what makes it challenging to photograph. Of course, animals are the hardest to photograph as they may be right in front of you one moment, and gone by the time you pull your camera out. Bees collecting nectar are a good example of a fleeting moment. I got lucky with this shot, where I managed to photograph a bee collecting nectar in the bags on its legs.

Dragonflies are notorious for flying around for hours without taking a break. I got lucky with this orange dragonfly who decided to take a very short rest on a tree branch not far from me.

This baby koala was a nice capture of the fleeting moment a couple of weeks ago, as he turned his head towards me for a few minutes so I could capture this photo.

Butterflies are the perfect expression of a fleeting moment, as they’re often difficult to capture since they don’t stand still for too long. I was lucky to get a photo of this giant owl butterfly.

Not just animals are fleeting in nature. The morning dew is another example of something that doesn’t last a long time and is gone by the time the sun is out and shining.

Our San Diego winters don’t get very cold but we manage to get frost several days a year. The frost melts as soon as the winter sun rays warm it up, but it’s very pretty while it lasts.

I think the most fleeting moments in nature are sunrise and sunset. They last only a few minutes but set the tone for the day and for the night.

A beautiful sunrise can inspire you for a whole day.

A word a week photo challenge: Weather

I’m participating in A Word in Your Ear’s photo challenge. This week’s photo theme is weather. San Diego weather is pretty regular, mostly sunny and warm, but we get rain sometimes (never enough), and even frost in the winter (a lot of frost this winter).

Frosty mornings in San Diego, California

Guess what I’ve been doing almost every morning these past couple of weeks? Taking photos of the frost we’ve been experiencing here in San Diego, California. It is CHILLY here, down to 30 degrees, even 28 recently, every single night. And the days are not very warm, even with the winter sun shining through a cloudless sky. The wind is a killer too. After we suffered from repetitive heatwaves the whole summer, Mother Nature must have thought we’d appreciate a cooling trend. And she’s right. I’ll take 30-degree winter nights anytime over 105-degree summer afternoons. 🙂

I’ve been taking lots of photos of frosty leaves and frosty plants. I don’t want to bore you to death so I’ll split them in a few posts, with other themes in between. Remember you can click on each image for a larger view.

We don’t get snow here so frost is the closest to ice we’re going to get. Talking about ice, here are some beautiful ice crystals on a leaf.

If you like ice crystals, how about these long ice crystals on twigs? Now that’s a lot of ice, brrrr!

I’ve saved my favorite photo for the end. I love how frost can also look like sugar frosting and I think this photo is the perfect example of a frosty leaf. I love how the ice crystals at the top of the picture are trying to recreate the missing end of the leaf. Out of all the photos of frost I’ve taken (and you’ll get to see more in upcoming posts), I think this is my favorite photo.

WordPress weekly photo challenge: Surprise – Frost in San Diego

After six days of almost continuous rain, the clouds finally went away yesterday. We woke up to beautiful blue skies and… freezing temperatures. Upper 20s to low 30s overnight, 65 degrees during the day. A huge range of temperatures that make it hard for my body to adjust throughout the day.

The surprise here has been the FROST. Lots of it! You see people scraping their car windshields in the morning. Sensitive plants have succumbed to frost. Bye bye my beautiful basil that kept on growing. Bye bye my zucchini that I wanted to pick next week.

But you know what I like best about frost? It’s beautiful! I noticed plenty of frost at my son’s school when I dropped him off yesterday so this morning, I grabbed my camera and managed to take these pictures. Remember you can click on any image below for a larger view. Let me know what you think!
