Today I’m participating in the WordPress weekly photo challenge and this week’s theme is “fleeting”. Remember you can click on each image to see a larger view. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

Nature is full of fleeting moments and that’s what makes it challenging to photograph. Of course, animals are the hardest to photograph as they may be right in front of you one moment, and gone by the time you pull your camera out. Bees collecting nectar are a good example of a fleeting moment. I got lucky with this shot, where I managed to photograph a bee collecting nectar in the bags on its legs.

Dragonflies are notorious for flying around for hours without taking a break. I got lucky with this orange dragonfly who decided to take a very short rest on a tree branch not far from me.

This baby koala was a nice capture of the fleeting moment a couple of weeks ago, as he turned his head towards me for a few minutes so I could capture this photo.

Butterflies are the perfect expression of a fleeting moment, as they’re often difficult to capture since they don’t stand still for too long. I was lucky to get a photo of this giant owl butterfly.

Not just animals are fleeting in nature. The morning dew is another example of something that doesn’t last a long time and is gone by the time the sun is out and shining.

Our San Diego winters don’t get very cold but we manage to get frost several days a year. The frost melts as soon as the winter sun rays warm it up, but it’s very pretty while it lasts.

I think the most fleeting moments in nature are sunrise and sunset. They last only a few minutes but set the tone for the day and for the night.

A beautiful sunrise can inspire you for a whole day.

A gorgeous sunset can give you hope for the next day.

I’m participating in LetsBeWild.com’s Wild Weekly Photo Challenge. This week’s Challenge is: The Beach!

Well, how often does it happen that I participate in two photo challenges about the same theme? And how often does it happen that these challenges show up in the same week? So I want to apologize for those of you who already saw the photo below in my post about beaches a few days ago. I promise you I have some really nice photos to make up for it in tomorrow’s Macro Monday post.

These are photos from  Coronado Beach in a gallery format. You can click on any photo to open the slideshow. To view any photo in a larger format, just scroll down while in slideshow mode and click on “view full size” on the bottom right on the page. Enjoy!

Today I’m participating in the WordPress weekly photo challenge and this week’s theme is “escape”. You can click on any photo below to see it in a larger format.

There are many ways to escape but I think my favorite is through books. Nowhere else can you visit faraway lands and people, real or imaginary, at any moment in time. My latest escape? The Guardians of Childhood book series by William Joyce. Wonderful adventures!

Living in San Diego, there are many places I can escape to. The first one I think of is the beach.

I can also escape to the mountains.

I can escape to a magical fairyland by going up these stone steps.

Or escape deep into the beautiful details of nature.

Oh, and now that I got myself some new Pirelli tires, I can escape really fast. Zoom zoom!

Travel theme: Beaches

Today I’m participating in Where’s My Backpack’s Travel Theme photo challenge. This week’s theme is “beaches”. Living in San Diego, it’s easy for me to get to the beach, yet I don’t do it very often. I love the fresh air and the wind, the smell of the ocean. I can’t stand the sand in my shoes and driving around for a parking spot. You can’t have it all!

I featured most of the photos below on my site before but I thought it’d be nice to put them together in a single post on beaches, in this case Coronado Beach. I’m using the gallery format for this today. Click on any photo to open the slideshow. I’m participating in LetsBeWild.com’s Wild Weekly Photo Challenge. This week’s Challenge is: Scent! Remember you can click on each photo for a larger view.

I’m going to use this photo challenge as an opportunity to feature a few more of the rose photos I took this past weekend at the rose garden in San Diego’s Balboa Park. You can see the other rose photos here and here.

Here’s another multicolored rose that featured a pleasant rose fragrance. It helps that it’s also very pretty to look at.

I loved the fragrance of the next rose. It had a very delicate and pure scent. Mmmmmm…

Other flowers can smell very look, including lavender, which comes in many varieties and sizes.

One scent I really enjoy is the one of wet dirt and grass after the rain. This after the rain scent is not too common in San Diego so I love it when it happens.

My favorite flower fragrance is lilac blossoms. Unfortunately common lilacs don’t like the San Diego hot and dry weather too much, so we find a different type here in nature called the Ramona lilac. Its scent is very, very light but it still looks pretty.

For my last photo, I’ll share one of my favorite scents: the smell of the ocean, here at Coronado Beach. I love the mix of iodine, salt and seaweed. Can you smell it?

Update: I won an honorable mention for this photo in the weekly contest.
