When I think about fresh and summer, watermelon comes to mind. Unfortunately I don’t have any to photograph today, but the next best thing is fresh cherry tomatoes from the garden.

Animals like to stay fresh and cool in the heat of summer in San Diego. This painted turtle seemed to enjoy alternating between swimming in the fresh pond water and resting on lily pads.

As for this nocturnal wombat at the San Diego Zoo, he tried to stay cool and fresh on a hot day. I’m not sure how well it worked out for him but he seemed pretty comfortable, don’t you think?

I recently took more picture of water lilies at the San Diego’s Balboa Park pond, and this is the first time I’ve captured light purple water lilies among small and large lily pads.

I was able to take photos of water lilies of various colors that day, so I hope to find the time to share more with you soon.

WordPress weekly photo challenge: the golden hour

Today I’m participating in the WordPress weekly photo challenge and this week’s theme is “the golden hour”, that first or last hour of the day that gives such a special light to everything around. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

I love the glowing effect the rising sun rays give to these puffy clouds.

On a winter morning, I love how the sun rays do their best to shine through the fog and make the fall foliage turn gold.

The morning sunlight right after a night of rain has an interesting effect too. I love to capture that special light on raindrops.

We don’t get a lot of frost in San Diego and when we do, it starts to disappear as soon as the sun comes out and exposes its warm rays. So it’s a race against time to capture the frost in the sunlight before it melts.

The late afternoon sun in the winter can give a nice golden look to yellow leaves, and the scene looks even nicer if you can capture the moon in the background.

Finally I like how bright the sky can still be while everything on the ground is getting darker as the sun sets.

Travel theme: Ripples

Today I’m participating in Where’s My Backpack’s Travel Theme photo challenge. This week’s theme is “ripples”. Remember you can click on the photos below for a larger view. If you like what you see, feel free to subscribe and receive nature photography updates a few times a week.

Ripples can be very subtle if there isn’t much water and that water isn’t disturbed. You barely see a few ripples in the water reflection of this seagull at Coronado Beach.

When ripples are more numerous and wider, they can distort the water reflection more. I like the shape of this white pelican’s reflection in the water because of these specific ripples.

And when ripples are even more numerous, the reflection becomes unrecognizable. This pelican’s white feathers give a nice glow to the ripples in front of him.

Travel theme: Peaceful

Today I’m participating in Where’s My Backpack’s Travel Theme photo challenge. This week’s theme is “peaceful”. It’s taken me a few days to get to this challenge because I was thinking about the types of photos I would use. I settled on a water theme because I find water very peaceful in many ways, whether it’s still or moving, quiet or loud. I hope you enjoy my choices!

Standing in front of the ocean is peaceful and refreshing at the same time.

What’s under water can be very peaceful too. That’s why I like visiting aquariums. One of my favorite underwater animals is the seahorse. I love how seahorses peacefully swim from one plant to the next.

Sea jellies look very peaceful and I love looking at them. However taking photos of sea jellies is not very relaxing, as only a few usually come out OK.

As noisy as they can be, I love sitting by waterfalls and enjoy their peaceful and stress-free effect.

Animals in ponds often look very peaceful, like this painted turtle who moved and swam very slowly and quietly.

I want to finish this theme with a photo that illustrates a beautiful, peaceful sound (out of the water). This is my brand new wind chime in my garden. I just got it this weekend after searching for the perfect wind chime for years, the one with the most peaceful sounds to my years. This is it and I love it!
