I love photographing bees as they’re collecting nectar off the many flowers we have here in San Diego. These pink flowers were actually blooms on a large bush last summer. I think I will add the first photo as a potential choice for my animal theme 2014 photo calendar. I love that hue of pink!

I love the look of pink grass, with its long hairy stems and its bright colors. I’ve featured pink grass before but today I wanted to show you a few close-ups. Here’s what decorative pink grass (and not pink) looks like as a whole. This is technically called Pennisetum setaceum ‘Fireworks’ (Variegated Purple Fountain Grass).

And here it is closer. Best use I’ve found for it? Tickling people’s necks. Works every time.

Macro Monday: green praying mantis

My kids and I were observing a large bumblebee collecting nectar in a pink flower yesterday when my oldest spotted this green praying mantis on the plant’s leaves right underneath. I first took this photo and unfortunately the praying mantis wasn’t sitting at the right angle and the bright sunlight reflected a lot from it.

After it got tired of me snapping pictures up close, the insect moved around a bit. Just enough for me to get a much better picture. Now, I’m usually not the self-bragging type but this praying mantis below looks darn good, especially for my first time capturing this insect!

I hope you enjoy this beautiful pink water lily. I love the bright yellow center of water lilies, with their thick pistils sticking right up.

Macro Monday: under a blue dragonfly

Sometimes you don’t have a lot of options when you photograph your subject. You can’t get to the right angle, the sun in on the wrong side, you can’t get close enough, etc. When I spotted the blue dragonfly below, it stayed put, high perched on a tree branch, and didn’t move anywhere else the whole thing I tried to photograph it. So I decided to photograph it from underneath and hoped something good would come out of it. I think my favorite part of this dragonfly on all photos I got is its intricate wings that seem to glitter in the sunlight. I was lucky to have a bright blue sky to use as a background that day.
